Washington’da Yüksek Yargı Kurulu’nun nefret özgürlüğünü yasallaştırmasıyla ve hele zenci rap müziği yıldızı Sister Souljah’nın zencilerin hep birbirlerini öldürmeleri yerine bir ‘beyaz öldürme haftası’ yapılmasını önerip Amerika’nın en ünlü kişilerinden biri durumuna yükselmesiyle nefret konusunun özel bir güncellik kazandığı günlerden birinde o Türk kadın bir otobüste gene karşıma çıktı; gene gelene geçene ağız dolusu küfür edip duruyordu. Yanına yaklaşıp kendisine şu soruyu sordum: “Tolstoy’un insanları yeterince sevip sevmediği yolunda bir kuruntusu olduğunu göz önünde tutarak, acaba sizin de insanlara olan nefretinizin yeterince olup olmaması gibi bir kaygınız var mı? Sevginin insanlara yararlı olmaya yönelik bir duygu olması gerektiğine göre, nefretin de yararlılığı düşünülebilir mi?”

Sorumun ilk yanıtı olarak sunturlusundan bir küfür savurduktan sonra sustu, biraz düşündü ve şöyle dedi: “Sevginin ne olduğunu çoktan unuttuğum düşünülebilirse de, nefretin karşıtı olduğu oranda sevgiye de yabancı değilim. Yeterliliğe gelince, insanlara olan nefretimin yoğunluğu bu bakıma bir tasaya düşmemi gerektirmiyor. Önemli olan, yeterlilik düşünmeden, ister sevgiyle olsun ister nefretle, insanlara yararlı olmayı gözetmemizdir. Ben, nefretin sevgiden çok daha yararlı olabileceği kanısındayım. İnsanlardan nefret etmek, onları nefret edilir kişiler olma koşulundan kurtarma özleminin ürünüdür. Ne ki insanlar, nefret edilir kişiler olma koşulundan kurtulmayı istiyor değildirler. Bu bakıma, onlara yararlı olma yolunda kendilerinden hiçbir yardım göremem. Sevgiden söz edenlerin nasıl sevgileriyle insalığa yararlı olma bakımından elleri bağlıysa, benim de elim ermiyor insanlığa nefretimle yararlı olmaya. İşte bu nedenle, sağa sola kin ve öfke kusmakla yetiniyorum.”
